First thing's first; What's Mafia Man 1?

Initial Pitch

  • Make a cool mafia dude

  • Make it a sequel for no reason

  • Go full camp

  • Give him a briefcase to give irrefusable offers

Game Loop

Level Transitions

Towards the end of a level, you reach a goon guarding a door.

He wants a certain amount of money to let you in the next level.

Gold Loop

We then introduce a level loop containing coins, leading back to the initial door.

The Payoff

Once you have enough money, you can bribe your way to the next level.

Then the following cutscene plays:

The end of level cutscene was essentially established before anything else, designing around making it pop off as much as possible was really fun!
